Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Head Coach Softball. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits. This position will be responsible for management and administration of all phases of the women's softball program, student-athletes, and staff.

The mission of NIU Athletics is to enhance the University, community and region through service and engagement while developing champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. With long standing traditions and core values centered on family, NIU Athletics is home to 17 NCAA Division I sport programs. Northern Illinois University, chartered in 1895, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 17,000 currently enrolled students and houses seven (7) degree-granting colleges-Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.

Position Summary
This is a professional coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Coaching - 25%
  • Preparation and conduct of all team-related activities including skill instruction, sport strategy and competitive opportunities.

Academic - 25%
  • To provide an overall positive educational environment for our Student-Athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
  • Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.

Personnel - 10%
  • Selection, oversight, development, and retention of staff (assistants, graduate assistants, and managers).

Recruitment - 10%
  • Supervise the recruitment strategy to attract top level Division I prospects including identification, assessment, campus visits and implementation of campus resources.

Safety and Conduct - 10%
  • Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university.
  • Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within the softball program.

Administration - 10%
  • Perform team-related administrative duties such as budget, scheduling, travel arrangements, etc.

Public Relations and Fundraising - 5%
  • Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fund raising, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics.

Departmental Needs - 5%
  • Assist with departmental needs as requested.
  • Cash handling responsibilities - $5,000 - $10,000 annually.
  • When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate athletic staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for NIU team efforts.

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years coaching experience and demonstrated successful coaching experience in softball at institution of higher education beyond High School.

Additional Requirements (SPS)
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA rules and regulations.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate with and relate well to female student-athletes, high school/club coaches and department support staff.
  3. Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes, particularly at the regional (Midwest) level.
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic forms.

Preferred Qualifications (SPS)
  • Master's degree.
  • Competitive experience in softball on the university or college level.
  • Experience as a Head Coach, Associate Head Coach, or Recruiting Coordinator.
  • Coaching experience at the Division I college level.

Physical demands/requirements
Walking, standing, sitting, lifting of 50+ lbs.
