Paralegal II

Department of Public Health

Number of Positions: 1

This position is open to the public and all current city employees covered under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, functions at the senior level, providing paraprofessional legal and administrative support to attorneys, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Monitor records management and provide records storage support.

* Provide guidance on Local Records Act compliance.

* Collects and organizes information and legal documents to respond to subpoenas and requests for medical records.

* Organize and maintain electronic document libraries.

* Respond to Requests to Admit.

* Indexes and files documents for record keeping purposes.

* Manages and delivers documents, including, but not limited to legal or proprietary documents, to outside counsel, as required.

* Trains and orientates paralegal staff in office methods and procedures, as required.

* Provide general administrative support for attorneys in the Office of General Counsel

* Additional support to the Office of General Counsel as needed.

Shift/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, and a paralegal certificate from a paralegal training program accredited by the American Bar Association, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

OR

Five (5) years of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.

OR

A Paralegal Certificate obtained from a training institution accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), PLUS at least one (1) year of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.

OR

An Associate's degree from an accredited college, PLUS at least two (2) years of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.

OR

A Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university, PLUS at least one (1) year of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal

OR

A Juris Doctorate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA)

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

* Knowledge of public health practice sufficient to adhere to HIPAA standards.

* Previous experience with creating and maintaining organizational systems.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
