Metra's Engineering Department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.

Reporting to the Director, Civil/Structural Design, the Civil Engineer 2 functions at the intermediate professional engineering level and is responsible for performing all aspects of civil engineering assignments and developing detail design calculations and sketches for the construction of various civil projects.

Evaluate and provide recommendations concerning consultant construction designs and specifications on construction projects to ensure feasibility and compliance with Metra's guidelines, funding requirements, and industry standards.

Collaborate with management to resolve technical developments involving design plans, scheduling conflicts, and staffing that involve other Metra departments or outside agencies.
Inspect work-in-progress on large scale projects to ensure workmanship conforms to design plans and specifications and adhere to construction schedules.

Ensure all documentation confirming projects meet quality control and quality assurance guidelines as set forth in the Consultant Design Quality Management Plan is complete.

Prepare modification of reports, specifications, plans, and construction schedules related to railroad construction projects.

Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.

Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

1. Must have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.

2. In addition to #1, must have four (4) years of civil engineering experience preferably in the railroad or transportation industry.

3. Good knowledge of:

  • civil engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards as they relate to railroad and road design.
  • materials, techniques, and components of railroad and road design.

4. Strong critical thinking and organization skills.

5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

6. Good negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

7. Considerable skill:

  • preparing underground utility design plans and profiles for roadways, railroads, and water and sewer systems.
  • reading detailed engineering drawings and interpreting engineering specifications.

8. Intermediate skill using:

  • database system applications.
  • Microstation and AutoCAD systems.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel.

9. Ability to:

  • organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate complex engineering problems and apply engineering knowledge to provide practical and cost effective solutions.
  • work as a team member or independently on major projects.
  • work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • lift and move up to 20 pounds.

10. Must:

  • possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.

Preferences:

  • Professional Engineering License preferred
