Job Description

NOW OFFERING COMPETITVE SIGN ON BONUSES FOR FT EMT-Ps with more than 2 years of experience.

The EMT-P serves as an integral member of the Emergency Department care team. As such it is necessary in this position to understand and integrate all aspects of patient care needs for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients while regarding the patient's growth and development process.

Unit Information:

  • 45 bed Emergency Department with mixed acuity; includes 4 pods of 10 beds each, 5 resuscitation beds.
  • Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Patient population is all age groups, generally 0 days - 21 years.
  • Staffing mix includes nurses, paramedics, nursing assistants, medical assistants, service representatives, pediatric emergency medicine physicians, pediatricians, and nurse practitioners.
  • Ancillary Support Staff include Social Work, Child Life, and Interpreting Services.

Orientation:

  • 8-10 weeks (first week is hospital orientation)
  • Orientation will be on all shifts, beginning on day shifts.
  • Consistency is attempted with preceptors although not guaranteed.
  • Hands-on experiences/trauma simulations within orientation hours.
  • Mandatory classes include PALS, ACLS, ENPC, TNCC, Welles training, Level IV PPE training.
  • Not included - triage training; this is to allow time for learning of Lurie protocols and practices.

Position we are hiring for:
  • Nightshift (3p-3a and 7p-7a shifts) and every third weekend.
  • Staff must remain in current position for at least six months before qualifying for position changes.
  • Position openings for different start times will be released by the Scheduling Committee based off of unit needs; positions are filled by seniority.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluates the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions, treatments, and therapies.
  • Recommends revision in the care plan according tochanges in patient needs.
  • Anticipates impending emergent situations and intervenes effectively.
  • Non-Inpatient Emergency Assessment and Response (NEAR) team; respond, assess, and treatment non-inpatients patients utilizing Basic Life Support (BLS) Services, escalating to Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Services or Code Blue as necessary.
  • Code Blue Team responder.
  • Decontamination Team first responder; will initiate the Decontamination Response Plan as to not delay patient care until the Decontamination Team arrives.
  • Serves as an integral member of the Trauma Response Team.
  • Communicates with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs and changes in patient statue.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources for referral or consultations.
  • Keeps up to date in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) National scope of practice by utilizing current EMS and healthcare literature for information and problem solving.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role.
  • Assist with the education and training of EMT students, registered nurses, medical students, residents and other trainees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate required, Associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Graduate of IDPH or NREMT-P approved Paramedic program.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in Emergency Medical Services or Hospital Emergency Department setting.
  • Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-P Certification required.
  • Employee must submit a letter of good standing from an Illinois Department of Public Health IDPH approved EMS system.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), certifications must be obtained within 1 year of start date.
  • Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals(PEPP), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP/NALS), Pediatric Pre-hospital Basic or Advanced Trauma Life Support (BTLS/PHTLS) are recommended.
